Description – Book Six

In this, the sixth book in the series, Grandpa and the children complete a small steam locomotive, and then find out how fast it can go. During the adventures on the little farm railway, they learn about railway speed records and the concept of mechanical power. Grandpa also tells the children more of his amazing-but-true stories.

The theme of the book is how much power it takes to go faster, with the simple physics of work and power being explained with stories and diagrams.

Accompanying the story are clearly explained technical pages with how-it-works information.  They are at the end of relevant chapters and do not interfere with the story. The ideas explored in this book will encourage a deep understanding of science and physics. If the reader has enjoyed the technical information in the previous books, they will find that Racing Trains takes them further.

Many technical ideas are simply explained: wheel sizes, coupling rods to increase train loads, work, power, using a graph to help understand numbers, and ping-pong balls to help understand why it takes so much power to go faster!  As usual, there is a glossary of special words.
